mix / blend movies

WARNING:
PLEASE DOWNLOAD AND TEST THIS PLUG-IN BEFORE PURCHASING IT. WE HAVE RECEIVED REPORTS OF INCREASED INCOMPATIBILITIES WITH NEW SYSTEM UPDATES, AND IT APPEARS THAT THE PROBLEMS
ORIGINATE OUTSIDE OF THE PLUG-IN.

what is it?

mix/blend movies is our best-of-class movie mixing plug-in for iMovie, and represents one of our finest achievement in composition technology. it adds to and combines the capabilites of our ‘minify’, 'multiple movies' and 'simple mask' plug-ins into a single, powerful, and incredibly easy-to-use package. unlike other mixing plugs, this one can

  • position, and re-size the movie to be inserted anywhere on the clip (this means that the you are not limited to a 1:1 blend!)
  • auto-generate a wide range of blend masks (16 base masks with millions of variants each)
  • import blend masks created with other applications
  • create blend masks from any picture
  • auto-scale the blend mask to fit the blended movie (freeing you of this tedious task)
  • auto-sync the imported movie to the clip's length, ensuring that they play exactly the same time (making filming the two clips much easier)

  • movie area
this is the area the second movie will be scaled to and positioned into. to move the mask area, simply click and drag inside the rectangle. to re-size the area, click and drag one it's handles.
while moving and sizing the movie area, the frame will be constantly updated to auto-enforce proportions, so you can re-size the imported movie without distoring it

the plug-in comes with 32 professional blend masks created by our art department.

since this plug-in allows you to place and blend movies at arbitrary size with arbitrary blend masks, it allows effects in a single pass that most FCE users will be hard-pressed to achieve in a whole day.

finally, as a member of our 'reference class' series, it also allows real-time preview for all editing.

what should I use it for?

use this plug-in whenever you need to insert a movie into your clip, but need more finesse (e.g. blending, shaping) than our 'multiple movies' or ‘minify’ plug-ins offer. we recommend that you use it for any non-trivial composition work that does not require

chroma keying, e.g.

  • blending two or more movies
  • knock-out style overlays of two or more movies (e.g. ‘burning letteres’ with real flames)
  • documentary-style blends of narrator and story
  • flashback-style blends
  • overlay-blends/insertions
  • side-by-side synched montages
  • video-wall montages etc.

features

show an accurate preview of the blended movie frame (only if live preview is on).

keep prop’s

when this box is checked, the imported movie/animation will keep it’s relative proportions. should you re-size the movie area, it will snap to the size that keeps the original’s proportions.

movie button
pressing this button allows you to assign a movie (or animated picture) to be blended with your clip.

movie preview
this little square will show a preview frame of the currently assigned movie

synch length
if this box is checked, the plug-in will automatically adjust the imported movie’s length to exactly match the clip’s length. If unchecked, a movie that runs longer than the clip will simply be truncated, and a movie that is shorter will end in black.

live preview, frame controls
use the slider to quickly advance through your clip, and use the '<' and '>' buttons to advance frame-by-frame. you can disable live preview by un-checking the box. if live preview is disabled you will not see the effect, but you gain some performance (important for some low-end systems). if you have assigned a movie to blend into your clip, this, too will update according to the time slider.

mask preview
this little box shows a preview of the current mask, taking into account the position and size of the movie area.

select all
pressing this button will select the whole clip surface as movie area

mask button
clicking this button will take you to the mask setup dialog.

mask source
this frame shows a preview of the mask source. this is what will be used to create the mask.

mask preview
this frame shows the mask as it is generated from the mask source, and after all transformations and options (including mask position and size, as set from the configure dialog) have been applied.

load picture
to load a picture as mask source, press this button. this plug supports any picture format known to QuickTime.

load pop-up (mask generator)
this pop-up menu enables you to choose between loading a mask, or engaging a mask generator.

  • picture:
mask generator is disabled. the mask will be generated from a picture that is loaded from disk.

a rectangular mask is created. fade slider is active

  • oval:
an oval mask is created. fade slider is active

this slider defines the size of the cross-fade between white and black areas when using the mask generator.

min slider
this slider controls the minimum black value. if you increase it, the darkest black will gradually become lighter.

max slider
this slider controls the maximum white. if you increase it, the whitest white will become gradually darker.

h off
this slider moves the mask horizontally (left and right).
note: this slider will not affect a loaded picture mask.

v off
this slider moves the mask vertically (up and down)
note: this slider will not affect a loaded picture mask.

reset
pressing this button will reset all sliders and methods to factory pre-sets.

method pop-up

  • red, green, blue:
use red, green, or blue channel to create the mask
  • brightness:
calculate a pixel's brightness, and use this as index for the mask

straight method
the values calculated by the method preprocessor are taken unmodified and placed into the mask. choosing straight will re-set the threshold slider to zero.

threshold method, threshold slider
instead of directly using the values from the pre-processor (as with the straight method), you can engage another pre-processor that uses the values passed from the soure to determine if the pixel should be masked or not. the threshold pre-processor only has two output states: mask (white) or replace (black). use the threshold slider to set the pre-processor's sensitivity.
